Take a look at the Next Generation Hoop Stars
By Galen Smith
Dexter Strickland
(Soph.) 63 Rahway (NJ) St. Patrick's:
This summer young Mr. Strickland had his
coming out party at the Nike All-American Camp. Strickland has developed the
ability to knock down the 3-ball consistently. Young Mr. Strickland is also
blessed with high flying athletism, he can take it to the rack and score from
anywhere on the floor. Look for Dexter to step into the lead role at St.
Patricks next year.
Jordan Theodore (Jr.) 61 Paterson (NJ)
Paterson Catholic:
6-foot Jordon is electrifying with the rock. Hes cat quick, and can get to the
rim a will. Theodore has developed range on his jump shot which makes him really
difficult to cover in the open court. This year hell be asked to do a lot more
for Paterson Catholic as its leader.
Travon
Woodall (Jr.) 60 Jersey City (NJ) St. Anthony's HS:
This summer at the ABCD camp Travon turned many of the top college coaches heads
as he held his own with the nations best. Travons explosiveness allows him to
blow by defenders and get to the rim. Look for him to be the next great guard to
wear a St. Anthonys Friar uniform.
Justin
Crosgile (Soph.) 511 Paterson (NJ) DePaul Catholic:
Crosgile is a problem to
opposing coaches and players alike. Hes so talented he can easily disrupt the
oppositions game plan. Hes as dangerous at penetrating defenses, where he can
rack up assists or lay-ups as he is hitting pull up jumpers. On the other side
of the ball hes easily one of the top defenders in the state.
Quintrell Thomas (Jr.) 68 Newark (NJ) St. Patrick:
The 6-foot 8 inch Thomas is waiting to show the world how much hes
improved in the past year. His rebounding and shot-blocking prowess will be a
welcomed addition to a St. Patrick team that lost its entire frontline a year
ago to graduation. What many will marvel at is the quickness of his 2nd
and 3rd bounce off the floor and a sweet stroke from 17-19ft out.
Gio Fontan (Jr.) 61
Jersey City (NJ) St. Anthony : Often
regarded as the 3rd best guard on a stacked Friars team. That may
not necessarily be true anymore. Fontan has put on a few inches and added a
little more muscle without losing a step. Hes the consummate point man, who
can drive, dish, and defend with the best of them, but his leadership qualities
are what separates him from the rest.
Tamir Jackson (Soph.) 62
Newark (NJ) St. Benedict Prep:
Jackson will
move into the starting line-up this year at St. Benedicts. Tamir is one of the
quickest ball handlers in the state. Jackson is a slasher who always finds his
way to the hoop for the score or assist. There isnt a tougher guard in the
state.

Lance Brown
(Soph.) 63 Paterson (NJ) Paterson Catholic:
6-3 Paterson
Catholic Sophomore Lance Brown had a breakout summer and now hes regarded as
one of the top prospects in the class of 2009 in New Jersey. Lance is one of the
most explosive young guards in the class of 2009. Hes strong and quick with the
ball, and plays with an aggressive mentality. Brown can get to the rim and
finish. He can also score off the dribble and the perimeter as well. Lance has
started to demonstrate the ability to draw defenders and create scoring
opportunities for his teammates.
Mike Rosario (Jr.) 63
Jersey City (NJ) St. Anthony:
Rosario is a scoring machine. He has a quick trigger from the mid-range and
3-point land that hes not bashful about pulling. His quick first step allows
him to get the basket with relative ease. When hes on, he can score in bunches.
He has a great feel for the game and is an underated passer and defender.
Ryan Brooks (Jr.) 68 Oakcrest (NJ) Holy Spirit:
Brooks has the potential to be the top small forward prospect in the
state. The way he rebounds the ball and coast to coast drives is reminiscent
of NBA great, Scottie Pippen. Once he plays with a little more toughness all
the high majors will come calling.
Eugene Teague (Jr.) 68
Vineland (NJ) St. Augustine:
This should be a breakout year for Teague. He has all the tools to be a good
one nice size, strength, and footwork. Big time post moves! He possesses soft
hands and a soft touch around basket. Defensively, hes good at using his wide
body but needs to improve quickness. This season he emerges as the go-to-guy for
South Jersey power St. Augustine.
Parris Bennett (Soph.) 66 Elizabeth (NJ) St. Patricks: Parris is beyond
his years in terms of footwork and touch. The 66 sophomore can score around the
basketball with either hand, put the ball on the deck and can knock down the
3-ball. Much will be expected of young Mr. Bennett as St. Patricks graduated
both of their starting forwards from a year ago.
Gregory
Echenique (Soph.) 69 Newark (NJ) St. Benedict:
Echenique is a is a throw-back center whos a
monstrous rebounder and skilled finisher. His continued maturation will have
him pushing Dexter Strickland for that #1 spot. One of the best big men in the
state right now, even though only a sophomore. |
