Rev. Dr. Frank
Naiper Jr. Scholarship Tournament Kicks-Off St. Benedict's Corey Stokes had a solid performance The 3rd annual Rev. Dr. Frank Naiper Jr. Scholarship tournament kicked off on Friday, August 12th at Don Bosco Tech in Paterson with 4 games. The tournament is sponsored by Paterson Recreation, and has many of the elite teams and players in North Jersey participating. Paterson Catholic, Passaic, Paramus Catholic, Rahway, St.Benedict, Newark Eastside, Paterson Eastside and Paterson Kennedy. Paterson Eastside vs St. Benedict's The Paterson team never was in this contest from the jump as St. Benedicts drainned 3pt shot after 3pt shot in the first 10 minutes of action. Junior Corey Stokes registered 4 3-pointers those 10 minutes and the Gray Bee's never looked back. Stokes, a rising Jr by every sense of the word, **Looks about 6'5 or 6'6 now** decided to try and show off his 3-point shooting in the contest going 5 for 14 from downtown and finished with 19pts 5 rebounds 4 assist and 2 blocks. Jr. Chris Smith collected 18pts in the victory. Antonio Brimley scored 14pts in the loss for Eastside Newark Eastside vs Paramus Catholic Corey Chandler vs Tyrell McKenzie. That's what we all came to
see and we were not dissapointed. Corey and Newark Eastside did not
have the game they wished at Don Bosco but they kept it interesting
until the final 3 minutes. Paramus Catholic went on to win 58-49.
Corey Chandler scored 14pts and grabbed 5 rebounds in the contest
with Tyrell McKenzie dazzling the crowd with 6 assist, 3 rebounds
and 10 points. Keep an eye out for rising Sophomore Wayne Mack of
Paramus Catholic. With Louis Guzman not in the building, the 5'9 PG
decided to step into the light and shyne, going for 17points on 7-10
from the field **3-4 from 3-point range. Rahway vs Paterson Kennedy The contest was going to be forfitted because Rahway got stuck in traffic on the Garden State Parkway or something, but the Paterson Recreation department found some replacements to play with Earl vs Pat. Kennedy. Jr. Anthony Nelson of Plainfield HS and 6'5 Sophomore Deshawn Mitchell (St. Benedicts or Oak Hill Academy in the fall) suited up with Earl to play. The game also got a serious feel when coach Ring decided to have the game count so the kids can play harder. Earl Clark, in his first games back from injury in Las Vegas dusted off the wheels and started this game by going for 13pts 7 rebounds and 4 assist in the first 16 minutes. Deshawn Mitchell notched 12pts in the first as well as "'Union county plus 2" took a half-time lead of 33-30. However, the game had to be stopped to start the 2nd due to an injury to the already 5 member "Union" team and Kennedy got the victory.
