Opening Round District 1 – AAAA Weekend Round Up

Top seeds all advance, Cheltenham comes from behind to defeat Glen Mills; and Central Bucks East defeated Central Bucks South in the “Battle of the Central Bucks”.

By Gregory Goettner

Weekend Results:

(12) Central Bucks East 51 – (21) Central Bucks South 46

When the brackets first came out on Tuesday, this match up really caught my eye. Since both these schools are neighborhood rivals, and many of these players went to the same middle schools as each other this match up had the makings to be an excellent first round play off game.

In front of a standing room only crowd, Central Bucks East opened the game up leading 12-0 after four minutes of play. The visiting South was very sloppy and timid during the first quarter. East was led by guard Keith Milnazik who scored 9 of his teams 19 points after one quarter where East would build a 19-3 lead going into the second quarter.

For as sloppy as South played during the first half they still within range of East and only down 29-16 after two quarters of play.

Both teams opened up the third quarter of play very cold, nothing was going for South until junior guard Matt Perozze hit a deep three pointer to cut the East lead to single digits right before the end of the third. South only allowed two baskets from the field and outscored East 13-9 during the third quarter to cut the East lead to 38-29.

South began the fourth quarter by full court pressing the East guards. This caused many problems for the East guards. South was able to capitalize on the East turnovers and cut the lead to 48-44 with under a minute left of play. With only a four point lead and South with the ball; East came up with a huge defensive stop with 30 seconds left to play. East forward Nick Menard (4-6 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter) would seal the victory by hitting 3-4 free throws as East would go on to live another day by defeating South 51-46.

Central Bucks East was led by Pat McLaughlin who scored a game high 14 points, after a hot start Keith Milnazik only scored 4 points after the 1st quarter to end the game with 13 points.

Central Bucks South was led by junior Matt Perozze, who scored a team high 13 points. Perozze scored 10 of his team high 13 points during the second half. South sophomore Will Barrett ended the game with 9 points.

Spectator Notes: This was great atmosphere for a play off game; both schools brought tons of students which was very nice to see.

Game Notes: Central Bucks East only scored 9 points from the field; all their other points in the 2nd half were from free throws. (13-18 from the free throw line)
